Driving & Vehicles

Isle of Man driving licence, vehicle registration, road tax, MOT vehicle test and the famous unrestricted speed limit.

Driving & Vehicles

The Isle of Man is famous for having no national speed limit on some roads. But there's more to driving here than that.

Driving Licence

  • New residents: You must exchange your UK/EU licence for an IoM licence within 12 months of becoming resident
  • Minimum age: 16 for a car (yes, 16 — not 17 like the UK!)
  • Apply: Vehicle Registration, Sea Terminal Building, Douglas. Tel: 686440
  • Cost: Provisional licence ~£15, full licence ~£20 (check current fees at gov.im)
No Speed Limit: The Isle of Man has no national speed limit on unrestricted roads (known as "derestricted" roads, marked by a white circle with a black diagonal stripe). Urban areas have 20-40mph limits. Mountain Road is derestricted — drive to conditions and your ability, not a number.

Vehicle Registration & Road Tax

  • All vehicles must be registered with the Vehicle Registration Office
  • Road tax (vehicle excise duty) is required annually
  • You can tax your vehicle online at online.gov.im

Vehicle Test (MOT Equivalent)

The IoM has its own vehicle testing programme at the Vehicle Test Centre, South Quay, Douglas. Tests are required for vehicles over 4 years old (tested annually). Tel: 686440.

Driving Test

Theory and practical tests are administered by the Road Transport Licensing Committee. Book via 686440 or online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive at 16 on the Isle of Man?

Yes! The minimum driving age on the Isle of Man is 16 for cars and motorcycles. You need a provisional licence and must pass theory and practical tests, just like the UK but a year earlier.

Is there really no speed limit?

On derestricted roads (marked with a white circle/black stripe), there is no numerical speed limit. However, you can still be prosecuted for dangerous or careless driving. The law requires you to drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions.

Do I need to exchange my UK driving licence?

If you become resident on the Isle of Man, you should exchange your UK licence for an IoM licence within 12 months. The process is straightforward — visit the Vehicle Registration Office with your UK licence, proof of address and a passport photo.
