Environment, Food & Agriculture (DEFA)

DEFA is responsible for the island's environment, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and wildlife.

Fishing

  • Sea fishing: No licence required for recreational sea fishing from shore or boat
  • Freshwater fishing: A licence is required. Purchase from DEFA or local post offices.
  • Scallop/crab/lobster: Commercial licences required. Recreational pot limits apply.

Countryside Access

  • The IoM has extensive public footpaths and rights of way
  • Raad ny Foillan (Road of the Gull) — 100-mile coastal footpath around the entire island
  • Millennium Way — 28-mile north-south heritage trail
  • Open hill land is generally accessible, but farmland requires permission

Agriculture

  • DEFA provides grants and support for IoM farmers
  • Agricultural Development Scheme — financial support for farm improvements
  • Countryside Care Scheme — payments for environmental land management

Environmental Permits
